Chief among them are a father's love, pride and concern, all so evident and unalloyed. For me, there's also the setting: Byron Glacier was the first I ever stood on, my first time on crampons, mere months after arriving in Alaska. ¶ We climbed the peak by going straight up the lower part of the glacier, then making for the ridgeline on the right. We were in the clouds on top and initially couldn't find our way down — almost descended by way of Carpathian. ¶ Also, I met Mugs on Denali, learned how generous a spirit he was, how his past achievements as a football player for Penn State did not matter to him, and how talented he was as a climber. And I am one of those, David, who could not at all believe how anti-climactic (if that's the word) was his going. ¶ I hope you'll keep this memory of you and Macklin, moving together through what for him was a new world, fresh and vital forever. Kathleen and I continue to think of you and Aisha and send you our deepest sympathies and condolences. Pico Alaskahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05270273287648772974noreply@blogger.com
